My Watercolor Workshop during COVID

 This is my watercolor/pen & ink class done COVID style! It worked out just fine. As you can see, we are all a distance apart and wearing masks.

There is a point when an artist has to decide when to quit. I was contemplating one more design to add to this painting, but after consideration, I have decided to stop now. I really like the way this painting developed and I hope that you found it interesting also. I am naming this painting "Reaching Out". And now I am done. All of you that tuned into my blog, I thank you and comments are welcome.

Stage 6

If you thought that the painting was done at stage 5, you were wrong! I had in my possession, which I found at a local fruit and flower market, these vines. At the time, I probably knew what they were from what plant but now I do not. All I knew is that I liked them. They were curly, and viney and dark and when I set up a still life of my tulips, I put the vines with them. You never know when working on a painting when to quit. But I have one more thing up my sleeve that I would like to do. (Possibly)

Stage 5

Here is the next phase of my painting. After putting in the gradient wash in the background, my plan was to put in this pattern. Along with the flow of the tulips, I have been inspired by marbling patterns. I collect decorative papers and love my marbled paper generally made in Italy. During this time of social isolation, I have been taking the time to do some experimenting.

Here is a close-up of the intricate pattern that I created. In order to get this effect, I am starting to use some mixed media incorporated with my transparent watercolor. I use Permanent White Gouache for a more opaqueness.

I still am not done yet. More to follow.

Tulips Stage 4

I want you to know that when I post the progress on this painting that it is in the rough stages and I am not glamorizing the painting or the image. Now you can see I have finished the tulips and have put the first stage of the background in. I wanted something dark going to pretty much white at the top. I wanted a background that was grayish in color but with a hit of color.  I started out the first wash with Payne's Grey. It more bluish in color but I wanted that to be my undertone. After that dried, I took the mixture of Payne's Grey an added Quin Sienna. It subdued the blue hue. I put a mask around the all the edges of the floral only. This is what it looks like after removing the mask. I now need to do some touch up along some edges. This is not my stopping point yet by any means. 

Stage 3

Stage 2 Leaves

Stage 2 of this painting has me developing some leaves. I wanted to get my colors for the leaves just right so I went ahead and started establishing what greens I wanted to use. Sap Green and Jadeite Genuine from Daniel Smith are the ones that I am using.

New Painting

A new day and a new painting during this stay-at-home time we are all living in! I wanted to work on something big and colorful. When that happens, it is usually a floral of some kind. Today it is tulips. Perfect for Spring! I am working on a 26"x40" watercolor paper and it will pretty much take up the whole sheet. I thought it would be interesting to show how I develop it. Here is the beginning.

Mont St. Michel at low Tide

During this time off, I reworked a painting that I did awhile back. Sometimes when you do a painting for the first time, you learn as you work on it. The second time around, you can improve upon it. I changed the composition and took out a lot of the detail. My goal was to create a mood. I am happier with my result the second time around. I added more texture this time. This is the feeling of the time we are living in right now with the pandemic that the world is experiencing. I think back to when this monastery saw days of the black plague. We are all in isolation much like the sailboat stuck in the sand waiting for the tide to come in to free it.

Art and the Coronavirus

As artists, if we are told to stay home, we are happy! We now have time to create. I expect to see some wonderful paintings come out of this time. As artists also, we can help to set the tone and mood for our fellow mankind. And instead of promoting worry and anxiety about what is going on right now all over the world, we can spread our creativity and imagination to others. We will make it out of this woods one step at a time. To all my artists that read my blog, stay safe and paint!

153rd Annual International Exhibition-American Watercolor Society

My painting "Soft Landing" has made it into the AWS Exhibition for 2020!

The exhibition will be held April 6-25, 2020 at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY.

If you get a chance to travel to NYC, the show is a good one and worth seeing for any avid watercolor artist.

I am appointed!

As of today, I have been appointed and sworn in as Director of Development for the National Watercolor Society! We are celebrating NWS's 100th anniversary of being a watercolor society! I am happy to have arrived on the board for this special year of 2020!

We are planning it to be special!

Wrapping up another Christmas

 
 Aside from doing my watercolors, which this blog is all about, I dabble working with decorative papers. Awhile back I created these Christmas cards to send out to friends and family. I am posting them to say Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Noel, Mele Kalikimaka, Buon Natale, Felicem Natalem Christi, Craciun Fericit, Nollaig Chridheil, Feliz Navidad, God Jul, and Vrolijk Kerstfeest! Let's try to make a global effort, especially us Americans, to get along and care about this planet that we live on and each other.

Monet's World

When I had the opportunity to travel to France, I had the pleasure of visiting Monet's Garden in Giverny. It was raining that day, which made it all the more interesting. Visitors were walking around with umbrellas which added to the scenes that I wanted to paint when I got back home to my studio.

Here is the famous bridge that was painted by Monet. This is truly Monet's World which is what I am naming this piece.

2019 NWS Show

Hi everyone! I have not posted for a few months mainly due to other projects that I had been involved with. But what I did last weekend was to work with the Board of Directors for the National Watercolor Society. I am currently shadowing the VP of Awards as I will be taking on that roll next year. New Studio

Here is my new art studio!  This has been my summer project to finally re-vamp and re-organize the studio. Things were getting out of hand and the clutter was starting to get to me. It was time to do something. Here is the final result and I am very happy with the results.  The colors are pleasing to me and I feel inspired.

Received 2nd Place of Best in Show

The Anton Art Center located in downtown Mt. Clemens, MI recently held an exhibit of local art teachers highlighting their work. Now that I am conducting watercolor workshops at the center along with teaching digital arts at a local community college qualifies me to be a part of the exhibit. I entered my painting: "Sentinels". I received 2nd place in the show! The painting was inspired by a trip to Florence, Italy. In Piazza Della Signoria, stands this statue of this lion. Carved into the pillars along with the statue are more weathered sculptures of lions. To me, they looked like they are guarding the Piazza, hence the title of Sentinels.

"Paris Graffiti" Chosen For Travel Show in Michigan

I attended the Michigan Watercolor Society Show this past weekend which was held in Bay City, Michigan this year. My painting "Paris Graffiti" was picked for the traveling exhibit at various galleries around Michigan.

What do you think of this watercolor? Is it a watercolor? Not really. So what am I talking about? This is a watercolor effect generated with Adobe Photoshop! Should I be worried that technology is taking over real painting? NO. NOT AT ALL!

Nothing will replace sitting down with paint and brushes and creating with your own hand and mind.

Watercolor Wednesday's-My Beginning Watercolor Class of 2019!

Here is my beginning watercolor class. They passed with flying (watercolor) colors. I had them do a tropical sunset scene. They were taught how to do a sunset with 3-color gradient wash. For their first time, I thought it came out well. The classes are held at the Anton Art Center in downtown Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Paris Graffiti Accepted into Michigan Watercolor Society Show 2019

My painting "Paris Graffiti" will be part of the 2019 MWS Exhibition in Bay City, Michigan. I did this painting from a trip to Paris and went down a Rue that had this wall of plastered posters and graffiti which I thought was very interesting. to add to the theme, I put a hint of someone stopping to observe the scene. I will keep you posted of any other further developments with the show.

Fabriano USA

I have received this information from Laurin McCracken regarding the show coming up in a couple of months in Fabriano, Italy......

Fabriano USA 2019 Artists,

Ken and Frank are reporting that all of your paintings are on the way to Fabriano. Bravo!

I have attached a PDF with all of the USA paintings on 4 pages. After you have a moment to look it over, I think you will agree that the USA is well represented with this body of work. I congratulate you for sending excellent examples of what the USA watercolor community can create. 

I am confident that, once again, the USA exhibition will be considered "Best of Show." I know for sure that the artists that will be attending Fabriano in Acquarello will make the USA exhibition a "must see" stop in Fabriano.

Final Koi Painting

This is the finished painting. All I did at this level was to blend the dark area on the bottom left a little more to my liking. You just have to know when to quit. Sometimes, I purposely put a painting away for a month or two and bring it out to look at it with fresh eyes. So now my blog followers can see how it was done step-by-step.

Stage 5 Koi Painting

Now you can see, I have developed the reflections in the foreground and put in a darker shadow.

At this stage, it is 99% complete. I still need to look on it for awhile and see what bothers me and to look at it with a critical eye.

Stage 4 Koi Painting

Now you can see how it is developing. I have laid in the dark areas of the pond and removed the masking. The reflections in the pool in the background are worked out and now I will be putting my attention on the reflections in the foreground.

Koi Painting Stage 3

Here we are at stage 3. I have rendered more of the Koi and I have put in darker washes in the upper right corner. I did this to establish how dark I wanted it to go and adjusted the other greenish blueish color in the water in the upper part of the painting. That area is still masked off while I apply the washes.

Koi Painting Stage 2

This is stage two in the development of my painting of Koi. As you can see, I put in more washes of the water and developed the color of the central koi in the painting.

Koi Painting

I started this painting of Koi fish in a pond and decided to document the progression of how I developed the painting. This is stage 1. I put in basic washes and applied masking to areas that I want to keep white.

Macaron Poster

A friend of mine who makes french macarons wanted me to design a poster for her. I illustrated the macarons in watercolor, took a digital image of the painting and brought it into Photoshop. On my watercolor blog, of course I mostly discuss and show my activity in the world of watercolor but I also teach advanced photoshop at a local community college. I combined these skills to create this poster for her. It is good to combine the latest technology with direct painting and drawing skills. This is the result. The above image shows the design and the one on top is the actual print out.

Watercolor Workshop

Here I am teaching my first watercolor workshop! It was a success. Students enjoyed it and I did too. I was happy to share my knowledge of the medium of watercolor and hope to teach many more in the new year. This workshop was held at the Anton Art Center in downtown Mt. Clemens.
