Start of a New Painting

I have started a new watercolor painting that I will show how it was developed step-by-step. This is the first installation of a painting of a sunflower that is on its way out. Why would I want to paint one that is wilting an at the end of the season? Because of the textures and the mood that I would like to create. I find not only beautiful blooming flowers exciting to paint but also, I find things about nature taking its natural course fascinating. For my painting, I wanted to create a tri-color gradient background. The colors I used were Daniel Smith's  Piemontite Genuine, Undersea Green and Sepia. I started applying a light wash of the Piemontite at the bottom background then applied Undersea Green the rest of the way up. I developed the right side of the background by layering the colors and blending the color transitions all the way up to the sepia blend. The masking around some of the key areas were masked off. (Blue) It is difficult to create a solid flat wash using three colors, but it came off well. Step 2 to follow.
